Janet & Tamlin, The Faerie Knight, - An Ancient Love Story...

Tamlin or Tamlane is an old Celtic name that means "Faerie Knight".  Tamlin was said to haunt the well at Carterhaught.  Janet was a lovely young woman and a curious and adventurous one.  Of course, she started to hang around Carterhaught.  And, of course, she met the infamous Tamlin.

He was everything people said he was, - handsome, captivating, sinister, - absolutely fascinating!  Janet could not stay away.  She fell in love with Tamlin.  Eventually, she found that she was pregnant.  She was afraid to tell her family.  But, she did tell Tamlin.

He was sympathetic, for he too, was very much in love.  But, he told her, honestly, there was little hope for their love...  Little hope, - UNLESS Janet was very, very brave.

"What???," Janet said.  "Tell me!!!"

"You must do exactly what I say," Tamlin told her, " --- EXACTLY!!!"

The look in Tamlin's beautiful gray eyes told her that this was a terribly urgent matter.

"This Hallomas is the time of the seven year tribute to hell that the faeries are required to make.  They do not want to sacrifice one of their own so I have been chosen as the offering."

"What?  But, I thought you were a faerie!," Janet said.

"No, no, my darling Janet.  I am a human in disguise, the third son of a great lord who was captured years ago by the faeries while I was hunting alone.  But, here is what you must do...  You must go to the path that lead out of Carterhaught Woods at midnight on All Hallow's Eve.  The faerie queen and her company will be passing by there on the way to the sacrifice site.  I will be riding a white horse, and the last in their procession.  You must boldly approach and run to me, drag me down from my saddle and fiercely hold onto me.  Do not, - DO NOT let me go, - NO MATTER WHAT, for the faerie queen will use terrible spells to get you to release me!...  As you love me, Janet, do not let me go!...  HOLD ME FAST AND IF YOU DO I WILL BE RELEASED FROM MY BONDAGE TO THE FAERIES AND I WILL BE YOUR'S!  Do you understand fully, Janet?"  Tamlin's eyes were so intense.

Janet shook her head.  "Yes, yes, -YES!!!  I WILL DO EXACTLY AS YOU SAY, Tamlin!!!"

Tamlin nodded, grimly.  And, left.

At midnight on All Hallows Eve Janet waited in the brush on the side of the path.  She was trembling with fear and anticipation, BUT, very, very determined to save Tamlin.  She saw the magnificent faerie procession passing.  She saw the last rider, Tamlin, on his white horse.  Swiftly, she jumped out of hiding and snatched Tamlin down from his saddle.  She held onto him with all her might, burying her face in his shoulder.

Instantly, the faerie queen was beside them, staring down at them in great anger.  She screeched, and Tamlin became an enormous bear who tore at Janet with teeth and claws.  He positively shredded her skin, but Janet held Tamlin fast.  Then, the faerie queen shrieked again and Tamlin became a huge serpent who began to squeeze the life out of Janet; she gasped, hardly able to breathe, but she would not let him go.  Then, finally, the faerie queen yelled tremendously loud and Tamlin became a red hot bar that burned Janet's hands and arms raw, BUT, Janet still held to him.

The faerie queen roared in anger, because her spells had faded and there, still in Janet's arms, was the human Tamlin.  All Janet's hurts were immediately healed.  Janet threw her cloak around the shuddering and almost fainting Tamlin, and looked up at the faerie queen.

"YOU HAVE TAKEN FROM ME THE FAIREST KNIGHT IN ALL MY COMPANY!!!," the faerie queen screamed.  "I WISH I HAD PLUCKED OUT HIS EYES!!!"  And, with that said, she and her company disappeared, leaving Janet and Tamlin alone on the path.

Very Cool & Easy Centerpiece For Your Halloween Party, - [Witches Hand Tapers]...

Get a large empty coffee can, paint it the color you want.  Fill it with cat litter, or gravel or glass pebbles.  Get 5 green taper candles.  Paint the ends of the candles like red fingernails.  Arrange the "fingers" like a witches hand, upright in the coffee can, making the fingers the right length to look like a hand.  Light the candles, or not.

Wicked Recipes: Goopy Spinach...

This is actually quite good...

Steam fresh spinach until it's well done.  Strain.  Put in a big serving bowl.  Make a sauce for it this way...

Get mild cheese taco sauce.  To it, add spaghetti sauce, stirring until the spaghetti sauce sauce is added to the cheese sauce, but only swirled, - NOT completely disappeared.  Spoon this over each serving of spinach.

Wicked Recipes: "Death" By Chocolate...

I make this famous desert this way...

I get a double dark chocolate cake.  I cut it into small squares and put it in a long plastic container box, [about 10" X 18"].  I make chocolate pudding and spoon it around the chocolate cake squares.  I drizzle chocolate syrup on it.  I sprinkle it will chocolate sprinkles.  I dot it with chocolate ice cream.  I give everybody a long iced tea spoon...

EVERYBODY DIGS IN!!!...

Wicked Recipes: "Warty" Pizza...

The "warts" on this pizza are button mushrooms and halfed cherry tomatoes.  Get or prepare a pizza.  [I like to buy a frozen pizza.  Then, I add my custom toppings.]

In this case, I get fresh button mushrooms or canned ones.  I cut them horizonally and put them on the pizza so that they stand up high.  I do the same for the cherry tomatoes, cutting them in half horizontally, the same as the mushrooms.  Then, I baked the pizza, as normal.

Wicked Recipes: Doll In Red Jello...

This is a classic that comes from the Punk Goth '80s.  It's definitely creepy, but very easy.  Get a big clear bowl or even a clean and empty fish tank.  wash thoroughly a plastic doll, the older the better, as long as it's not falling apart.  Make up the red jello, adding fruit, if you like.  Chill until set.  Put it on the buffet table, with a big spoon.

Wicked Recipes: Eyeball Egg Salad Open Faced Toast...

Make egg salad.  Get whole green olives stuffed with pimentos.  Make Texas [thick slices] of plain toast.  Assemble toast open faced sandwiches by spreading the toast with egg salad and then cutting the green olives in half and putting 2 olives on each slice, - like they were eyes.  Make sure the red "pupils" of the "eyes" are showing!

Wicked Recipes: Witches Fingers...

This is a great little easy appetizer, especially for Halloween...

Get pretzel rods, slivered almonds and cheddar cheese spread [the thick kind].  Put a dab of the spread on the side end of each pretzel stick.  "Glue" a sliver of almond on each pretzel rods as a "fingernail".   Put the finished "fingers" in a tumbler and set them on your buffet table.

Buttery Spirits...

What is a buttery spirit?...

This short traditional tale will tell you.

There was once an inn keeper who greatly desired to get rich.  To this end, he did everything, absolutely everything, in his power with his business to do so, cutting his expenses as much as possible...  He watered his ale.  He made meat pies out of dead dogs.  He served the smallest possible portions.  But, all to no avail.  His inn did not show profits.  In fact, it lost money, - continually lost money.

At last, the innkeeper got a wise man to help him.  The innkeeper and the wise man went to the innkeeper's larder.  There, the wise man told the innkeeper, was seated an enormously corpulent buttery spirit gorging himself on any food he could find.  The buttery spirit was enjoying himself immensely, slobbering and laughing as he stuffed his bulging cheeks and huge belly.  Of course, the innkeeper could not see the buttery spirit, but he took the wise man's words as the truth and took his advice, beginning to serve honest, good meals for the price he asked.

Immediately, the innkeeper began to see success in his business.  In time, he asked the wise man to return to his inn.  The wise man went right to the larder and saw the skinny buttery spirit whining and whining that he was wasting away.  A bit after this, the buttery spirit left the inn, indeed, - for good!..  Terrible greed does not pay!

Legend of the Isles, - The Faeries, - [Would you be brave enough to incite their wrath?]...

Hobbits, - hobgoblins... What is a Hob?...

The word "hob", or "lob', is is a name for a group of small rustic faeries.  Brownies belong to this tribe.  Most hobs are kindly beings, unless they are hobgoblins.  Many hobs are quite mischievous.

A sinister hob, a headless hob, that William Henderson mentions in his book, "Folklore Of The Northern Countries", hung around a road in England, near Hurworth and Neasham, but could not cross the river Kent, which flowed into the river Tees, because evil faerie creatures do not like to cross running streams. He was exorcised and supposedly laid to rest under a large rock for 99 years and 1 day.

Another hob mentioned by William Henderson was more of the helpful brownie type who liked to be near Sturfit Hall in Yorkshire.  He did household chores, as brownies like to do.  But, the family he was attached to saw him working one night and thought he was poorly and raggedly dressed, so they gave him a new cloak and a hood.  The brownie was delighted with his new clothes and began to sing and dance:

                                      "Ha, - a cloak and a hood,
                                        Hob'll never do mair good!"

And, with that the brownie left.  The family never saw him again.

Most hobgoblins are of the tricky type of small faerie, and are fond of practical jokes, many which are not that funny.  But, some are really nasty to people.  Boggarts and bogles are some of the more cruel hobgoblins.

Types Of People Faeries REALLY Hate, & The Miser And The Spriggans...

Hmmm...  Yes, we hate nosey people, those who love to spy on anyone, but especially us [!], and we hate misers [The fey have no conception of frugality!], and sluggards or lazy people, and messy people.

There is a story about a miser who had heard of the fabulous treasures of the fey, of the gold and jewels that were scattered everywhere in an elegant and sumptuous faerie hall that used to appear on a lonely hill.

One night, the miser sneaked up to the faerie hall.  He looked in the windows.  He even managed to pry open a door.  He approached a huge pile of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, pearls, opals and rubies, thinking that he could scoop some of them up and get away fast!  But, unknown to the miser, a bunch of spriggans were watching him.

The miser made his move, grabbing the jewels.  Instantly, the spriggans leaped on him.  They retrieved the jewels, tied the miser down with many thin, yet tough ropes and pinched and poked him until he was sore and bruised all over.  Then, he let him go, but chased him, yipping, yelping and howling, all the way back to his home.

***From the 2nd Week Of The GLMF...

The Faerie Mushroom Circle...

Some of them are hundreds of years old and hundreds of feet in diameter.  They are found in the woods or meadows.  Many of them are in the Celtic lands, especially in Ireland.  One huge one is in France.

It is said that if a mortal steps inside a faerie circle he/she may be forced to dance with the fey as they leap and cavort wildly around in the circle, until the person drops down from exhaustion, - usually dead. A person can be saved by a friend, if the friend stands outside the circle, extending a hand to the human dancer and pulling him/her safely out of the circle.

In her book, "Legends, Charms & Superstitions Of Ireland", Lady Wilde notes that a beautiful girl named Kathleen danced with the Tuatha De Dannan King of the West, the King Of Knockma, Fin Bheara.  Kathleen danced all night, flowers in her hair.  In the morning she was found dead on top of a faerie mound, but some said that she was taken to Faerie Land where she lives still...

Ten Dark Fairy Tale Origins...

Wonderful, Accurate Info About The Banshee & Other Faeries Related To Her...

The Banshee,- Or Bean Sidhe, And The Bean Nighe...

The banshee, or as it is less spelled, but pronounced the same, - bean sidhe, meaning"faerie woman", is no one you would ever want to meet!  She is sometimes a withered old hag, sometimes a beautiful young woman with silvery hair dressed in flowing white, gossamer robes.

The ancient Irish keening at a funeral is based on her horrid, ear-piercing wail, a wail that could never come from an earthy creature; it is said to be able to shatter glass.  The bean sidhe is said to come at the deaths of members of the five great families of Ireland: the O' Longs, the O' Briens, the O' Gradys, the O' Neills and the Kavanaughs.

The bean nighe is similar to the bean sidhe.  She is a skeletal and weeping woman seen at a stream, or a ford; she bends over the water, washing the bloody garments of those who are about to die.

"What is a Pooka?', - from the old movie, "Harvey", with Jimmy Stewart...

The Great Irish Phouka...

There are pookas, but THIS is the great one.  He is half human-half horse, usually, but sometimes he takes the form of an eagle or a bat.  Often he wears a chain about his neck.  He is probably one of the main tricksters of the universe, a genius in this particular fey activity.

Quite a few places in Ireland are named for pookas: a falls on the Liffy River near Ballymore Eustace, named Pool-a-Phooka [the Phooka's Hole] - in County Cork, the ruins of a castle named Carrig-a-phooka [the Phooka's Rock].  Then, there's Puckstown, Puck's Fair, Pooka's Ford, Puck's Castle...

The Phouka likes to hang out near bogs and swamps.  Whoever is foolish enough to jump on the back of the Phouka when he is a horse is in for a very wild ride!  Many of the older Irish think that feeling the presence of the Phouka is a bad omen.

Pookas, the small ones, used to be numerous.  It is said that a person should not pick berries after Michaelmas, [September 29th] because then the pookas piss on them and the essence of the berries is ruined...  Ha-ha-HA!!!

Mauuu-Hauuu-Hauuu!!!... I positively love this!!!... I would, - right?... Night On Bald Mountain - Fantasia (1941) (Theatrical Cut)

What Is The Wild Hunt???...

The Wild Hunt has been known for centuries in Europe, especially in the Celtic Lands.

In England it is supposedly led by the Devil, or Old Nick, Beelzebub, Satin, The Arch Deceiver, --- and all his many names...  The Devil brings his hounds on the Hunt, of course, his red eared, red eyed hell hounds, and they have many names too: the Devil's Dandy Dogs, the Gabriel Rachets, the  Yeth-hounds or Yell-hounds, the Whistlers, the Dartmoor Pack, the Whisht Hounds...  They were also called the Lyme Hunt...

The "Anglo Saxon Chronicle" of 1127 says that after February of that year people saw a group of charging dark riders on dark horses traveling at an enormous speed behind fierce black hounds with staring eyes and panting green tongues.  Around Halloween in the 1940s, around Trauton, England, the same type of thing was sighted.

In Dartmoor and Cornwall, the spectral hounds are said to be under the control of huge headless riders.  The Christian church of the time warned people to change their bad ways or the Devil and his slavering, fire breathing horses and yelping, baying dandy dogs, one stormy night, would hunt them down and drag them, screaming and kicking out wildly, to Hell.

Lewis Spence, in his book, "British Fairy Origins", wrote that the hounds of the Wild Hunt were sometimes called Sky-yelpers and that they were headless and raced high in the air.  [Now, - they yelped without heads and mouths???... Hmmm...]  If the pack went back and forth over a house a death was sure to occur.

For humans, worst thing about seeing the spectral Wild Hunt was the fear that they would be caught up in it, either to become one of the hunters or to be the prey.  The spell of the Wild Hunt would not be broken until the first rays of dawn were seen.  A few remnants of legends tell of people fighting off the Wild Hunt, but, then, the Hunt returned the next night, and the next, and the next, to overcome them and eventually bear them away.

Humans & Other Creatures At The Great Lakes Medieval Faire...

***Did You Meet Me There???...

At the 2016 Great Lakes Medieval Faire???...  What a time we had, that 1st weekend, me and my darling and faithful bat, Elfera.  Only she accompanied me for my brilliant crow, Diaval, spoiled and naughty boy, stayed home in his tower room because he had a bit of catarrah, a return of his dry and raspy cough, which he sometimes gets from cawing too loud and long, complaining when he doesn't get enough of his favorite cheddar cheese crackers, garnished with juicy tomatoes and slices of black olives. [Elfera is much easier to please in her choice of treats; she just eats bugs, relishing mosquitoes.]

Well, - well, - well...  I got to greet, once again, wonderful old friends as I walked the shady and sun dappled forest paths of Avaloch.  [Sigh, - sigh.]  Avaloch is like that mythical and musical land, - Brigadoon...  It too returns to the Mist, the Ether, disappearing during the busy & OH, THE SO, SO CRASHING BORE of the work-a-day week in the human's world, only appearing in delightful silvery essence on summer weekends, from the middle of July until the first part of August, - 6 glorious and often very, very balmy weeks of year in the kingdom of the United States Of America, in the province of Northeastern Ohio, in charming Geneva-On-The-Lake-Of-Erie, - actually...

I also was able to meet, for their 1st time, many sweet and adorable human children at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire.  They recognized me instantly by my marvelous black horned headdress, of course, and my beautiful midnight black feather wings.  I gave the children spider rings and reminded them that, although I have practiced negative magicks for countless, - positively COUNTLESS time periods, I am a subtle being, not all BAD, for it was my kiss of true love, a mother's precious love, that awakened Aurora, the Sleeping Beauty!...

Yes, - I AM MALEFICENT, - BOTH HEROINE & VILLAIN!!!...  Approach me with caution, but know, also, that my heart is very tender and my mercies, if activated by the genuine honesty and courage of the supplicant, are great...

Visit me again here, - on my blog, --- with love & green flames of magick!,  - ******* MALEFICENT, EMPRESS OF THE UNSEELIE.  *******
