Deep Roots...

Halloween has deep historical roots connected to honouring ancestors, though it has evolved into a largely commercial and playful holiday today.
The connection comes from Samhain (pronounced sow-in), an ancient Celtic festival celebrated over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, Scotland, and parts of Britain.
Why Samhain Was Tied to Ancestors ;
The Thin Veil: The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living world and the Otherworld became blurred.
Returning Spirits: Because the veil was thin, spirits of the dead and ancestors were thought to cross back over to visit their former homes.
Offerings and Protection: Families left out food, drink, and lit candles to welcome and guide their deceased loved ones, while also lighting bonfires or wearing masks and costumes to hide from or ward off any harmful or mischievous spirits.
How It Transformed
Christianization: In the early Middle Ages, the Christian church designated November 1 as All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day) and November 2 as All Souls' Day to honor martyrs, saints, and departed souls, shifting October 31 into All Hallows' Eve (Halloween).
Modern Evolution: Over the centuries, the solemn or spiritual traditions of remembering ancestors merged with folk customs like "souling" (going door-to-door for food in exchange for prayers), which eventually turned into modern trick-or-treating, costumes, and parties.
While modern Halloween focuses mostly on candy and costumes, parallel autumn festivals—such as Mexico’s DΓa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November, still explicitly center on welcoming and honouring ancestors.
πTo Those Who Came Before ..
Thank you for the ground we tread,
For quiet strength and words unsaid,
For rivers crossed and battles won,
That we might see the present sun.
May your memory softly keep,
In waking hours and gentle sleep,
And may the path you carved so clear
Bring peace and light to guide those still here..
