Beggar's Night, --- October 30th...
Beggars Night is a regional U.S. tradition—especially in Iowa, Ohio, and parts of the Midwest—where older children go trick‑or‑treating on the night before Halloween, October 30, and traditionally tell stories, jokes or riddles or sing songs to earn candy. Beggars Night is an alternative trick‑or‑treating night created to reduce Halloween‑night vandalism and improve safety for children. It typically occurs on October 30, though the exact date varies by region. It began in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1938 after more than 550 vandalism reports on Halloween. It's common in Iowa, Ohio, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Western New York, Southern Maine, and Western Pennsylvania. In Des Moines, Beggars Night was long held on October 30, but in 2025 the city officially moved trick‑or‑treating to October 31, ending the tradition locally. Often no costumes, but with huge pillow cases to hold treats, teens go from house to house... Beggars Night remains a distinctive Midwestern variation on Halloween focused on safety, community, and lighthearted fun.
